Tampa Places Third in 2013-14 SSC Mayors’ Cup Men’s Division Trophy
WINTER PARK, Fla. - The University of Tampa was third as Saint Leo University will maintain ownership of the Sunshine State Conference Mayors' Cup all-sports trophy after winning the men's division for the second-straight year in 2013-14. The Lions claim the trophy outright for the first time after sharing with Florida Southern a year ago.
First presented following the 1986-87 academic year, the award was traditionally sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC member institutions are located.
"Congratulations to President Arthur Kirk, athletic director Fran Reidy and the entire Saint Leo Athletic Department and student-athlete community on and outstanding academic year," said SSC Commissioner Ed Pasque.
In the men's division, points are awarded based on final regular-season conference standings in baseball, basketball, lacrosse, soccer and tennis. For cross country, golf and swimming points are award based on a team's finish at their respective conference championship event.
Saint Leo led the league with a total of 46 points. The Lions won the men's soccer regular-season title, and finished runner-up in basketball, cross country and golf. Saint Leo finished third in baseball and lacrosse.
Florida Southern finished second with a total of 43.5 points. The Moccasins captures conference titles in basketball, cross country and swimming. They finished runner-up in lacrosse and third in baseball.
Tampa claimed third with 35.5 points, followed by Barry (30), Lynn (30), Rollins (27.5), Nova Southeastern (23.5), Florida Tech (21.5) and Eckerd (13.5).
