HOW IT HAPPENED:
v.s. No. 11 Georgia State: The Spartans kicked of weekend play squaring off against the No. 11 ranked Georgia State Panthers early Saturday morning. Other than an injury to Angel Williams in the 2s that was filled by Sara Szalay, the Spartans fielded the same pairings as last weekend and seem to have found a steady lineup. GSU dominated the 1s, 2s, and 5s and took each match in straight sets sealing the duel. Tampa though showed some fight in the 3s and 4s. The Wolfe twins battled hard but lost both of the first two sets by a close margin. Madison Brunick and Keely Hamilton extended the first set but ultimately fell 25-23 and also fell in the second.
v.s. Houston Christian: The Spartans looked to bounce back from their early morning defeat in an afternoon matchup against Houston Christian. Despite their struggles against GSU Tampa went with the same pairings as they did in the morning. Payton Brunick and Julia Oswald dominated the 1s and won both sets by a wide margin. (1-0 Tampa) The Huskies won the 2s but the Spartans responded with a win in the 5s to take back command of the duel. (2-1 Tampa) Both the 3s and 4s were extended to three sets. In both matchups HCU won the first set but Tampa responded in the second to force a third. And on both courts the Spartans came out on top in the final set sealing the duel. (4-1 Tampa)
v.s. No. 16 South Carolina and Arizona State: The Spartans were schedule to play on Sunday against No. 16 ranked South Carolina and Arizona State, but the matches had to be canceled due to inclement weather.
UP NEXT: The Spartans return home to host a weekend tournament on Friday (3/31) and Saturday (4/1).
