HOW IT HAPPENED:
v.s. Saint Leo: The Spartans kicked off weekend play squaring off against a familiar opponent, the Saint Leo Lions. Tampa's 5s, Kalli Cors and Alivia Horn, came out strong for the Spartans and claimed an early win. (1-0 Tampa) After an extended first set the Spartan 4s, Keely Hamilton and Madison Brunick followed suit and took their match in two sets and put the Spartans in the driver's seat. (2-0 Tampa) Saint Leo however, looked determined to challenge the Spartans and took the 3s in three sets and inched back into the duel. (2-1 Tampa) The Spartans 2s fell in three sets, but not before Julia Oswald and Payton Brunick sealed the duel for the Spartans in dominating fashion in the 1s. (3-2 Tampa)
v.s. Erskine: For the second time in three weeks the Spartans squared off against the Flying Fleet from Erskine, and just as they did three weeks ago the Spartans came out on top. Tampa's 2s fell again in three sets, but each of the other matches was all Tampa. The Spartans allowed an average of only 11 points per set across the 1s and 3s-5s and took each match in two sets. (4-1 Tampa)
v.s. PBA: To start the day on Saturday Tampa squared off against emerging rival PBA. Cors and Horn again took the 5s convincingly, but this time it was the Spartans who faced an uphill battle after losses in the 4s and 3s. (2-1 PBA) Tampa took the 1s decisively leaving the 2s to decide the duel. (2-2 Tie) Cassidy Ehrie and Angel Williams took the first set of the 2s but the Sailfish responded in the second to force a third. In a back-and-forth set it looked like PBA were going to take the match and the duel as they held a 14-11 lead. The Spartans however rattled off five consecutive points, three of which they faced match point, to flip the script and take both the match and the duel. (3-2 Tampa)
v.s. Florida Southern: To close out the day, and the tournament, the Spartans took on Florida Southern. Making their season debut for the Spartans was Gia Marinelli, in the 4s, and Sammie Ostrander, in the 2s Both walked away with victories after the Spartans dominated each of the five matchups, putting the finishing touches on a successful weekend for the Spartans.
UP NEXT: The Spartans travel to Coastal Carolina to play on Friday, 4/7, and Saturday, 4/8.
