Top-Ranked Spartans Take Doubleheader Heading to Final Regular Season Game
NEWBERRY, S.C. - The number-one ranked University of Tampa baseball team extended their season-high winning streak to 11 games after sweeping a doubleheader at Newberry College. After winning game one 9-5, the Spartans took the second game 11-3 as they move to 44-9 on the season.
In game one, back-to-back three run innings in the third and fourth catapulted UT to victory. Kevin Ferguson got the victory, improving to 11-2 on the season as he hurled five innings for Tampa. He allowed three runs while striking out five.
Junior Mejia was one of five Spartans to record two hits as the junior from Ventnor, N.J., was 2-2 with two RBI's, two runs and a walk. Paul Cruz, Craig Corrado, Troy Ferguson and Chris Rosenbaum each added a pair of hits in game one as well.
Jonathan Holt picked up the save as he recorded his 16th of the season, which is the most in NCAA II. Holt tossed 2.1 innings, giving up two runs with a pair of strikeouts.
In game two, Jose Jimenez hit his 12th home run of the season and Ryan Williams slugged a grand slam as starter Anthony Perez got the victory to improve to 5-0. Perez struck out four in five innings pitched for UT.
The same two teams will conclude the series tomorrow in a 1 p.m. matchup at Newberry. The game marks the regular season finale for the Spartans, who are looking to strengthen their bid to host the NCAA II South Regional.
