Spartans Head to Postseason Riding 12 Game Win Streak
NEWBERRY, S.C. - The top-ranked University of Tampa extended their season-high winning streak to 12 games after an 8-2 victory over Newberry College. The Spartans concluded the three-game sweep to improve to 45-9 on the season as Newberry ends their season at 19-33.
Starting pitcher Ross Jackson struck out a career high eight batters en route to his eighth victory of the season to move to 8-4. He pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk. Scott Chapman entered in relief, where he pitched the final four innings to record his first career save as a Spartan.
Roberto Mena got UT on the board first with a solo home run in the second inning. Troy Ferguson then gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead an inning later with a two run shot, scoring Junior Mejia.
Each team added a run in the sixth before Tampa tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh and ninth innings to put the game out of reach.
Ryan Kennedy joined Mena and Ferguson with multiple hits as each totaled two. Ferguson also drove in a team-high three runs as each of the top five batters in UT's lineup had an RBI.
Tampa, who is also the number one team in the South Region, will await word on where the regional will be played. The location is expected to be announced on Monday as the NCAA II South Regional is slated for May 17-20.
