Tampa’s 11-Game Win Streak Snapped by Nova Southeastern
TAMPA, Fla. - The sixth-ranked University of Tampa baseball team (24-5-1, 4-3 SSC) saw its 11-game winning streak snapped in a Sunshine Sate Conference matchup with Nova Southeastern University (19-11, 4-1 SSC), dropping a 13-5 game to the potent Sharks offense.
Senior Steven Broschofsky collected two hits and drove in two runs for the Spartans, including his second home run of the season. Paul Cruz led Tampa with three hits in four at-bats to go with a team-high two runs scored.
Scott Chapman got the starting nod for the Spartans, and lasted just three and one-third innings against the Sharks. Danny Keefe pitched a scoreless sixth inning for Tampa, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Brandan Teague made his pitching debut for the Spartans, allowing an unearned run on two walks in the ninth, and striking out one in his one inning of work.
Nova and Tampa traded runs in the first inning on an RBI single by the Sharks' Dale Alberto, and a sacrifice fly by the Spartans' Jose Jimenez that scored Cruz, and sent the game to the top of the second tied at 1-1.
The Sharks opened up a 6-1 lead with five runs in the second on six hits, including four straight hits with one out. The five-run inning was highlighted by a two-run single by Cory Clark. Nova added to the lead with three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth, taking an 11-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Broschofsky led off the Spartan fifth with a solo home run into the right center field netting, his second of the season that cut Nova's lead to 11-2. Tampa added three more runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Jesus Barroso, an error, and a one run single by Broschofsky to cut the lead to 11-5.
Tampa and Nova will resume the three-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1 pm. Game two will follow 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
