#24 Spartans Take Down Sailfish 10-4
TAMPA, Fla.-The No. 24 University of Tampa Spartans baseball team took care of Palm Beach Atlantic 10-4 Wednesday night. With the win, Tampa improves to 19-7 while the Sailfish drop to 3-19.
The Spartans opened up the scoring in the first when Tyler Cox led off with a single. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jesus Barroso then scored when Jose Jimenez drove him in with base hit through the right side. Tampa would add another run after a pair of doubles from Steven Broschofsky and Jared Simon. A Garrett Maines sac fly would drive in the third run of the inning.
In the bottom half of the second, UT would use a Nick Nordgren single and a Tyler Cox double to push across their fourth run of the ballgame. Tampa would add at least one run in each inning after until the sixth, tacking on six more runs on nine hits.
Five Spartan hitters registered at least two hits including Cox who turned in a career high five hits and three RBI's. Simon contributed with three hits-two doubles and a triple-to go along with two batted in. Jimenez, Broschofsky, and Brett McKean also had multiple hits.
Starter Daniel Foltz (1-0) was effective over five innings of work surrendering only two runs on seven hits while striking out four to pick up his first win on the season. Tommy Meagher pitched two innings of relief allowing two runs on two hits. Danny Keefe would toss a scoreless eighth to make way for Alex Koronis who would strike out two in an inning of work to seal the Spartan victory.
The Spartans will open conference play next as they welcome Eckerd Friday night for the first game of three this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
