#15 Spartans Defeat Sailfish In Extras
TAMPA, Fla. - In an extra-inning affair, Dagmar Pena's sacrifice fly lifted the No. 15 University of Tampa Spartans over the Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish by a final score of 9-8. The four-hour contest saw 31 hits between both sides as Casey Albanese scored the game-winning run in the top of the 11th. The Spartans move to 36-12 on the season as the Sailfish drop to 6-33 on the year.
The Spartans took a quick 4-0 lead after two innings of play thanks to an RBI single from Jose Jimenez in the first and RBIs from Jesus Barroso and Mike Schwartz. Jimenez and Schwartz added another RBI each in the fourth to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Though in control for the first three innings, Tampa starter John Wiedenbauer got roughed up in the bottom of the fourth, allowing six runs to cross home plate to knot the score at 6-all. The Sailfish added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take their first lead of the contest 8-6.
Tyler Cox singled home Casey Albanese in the seventh and Schwartz added his third run batted in of the game when PBA's Dan McIldoon issued him a bases-loaded walk to tie the game once again, this time at 8-8.
Daniel Foltz provided Tampa with yet another strong relief performance, tossing three and one-third innings to keep the Spartans in the game. Foltz allowed just two hits to go along with two strikeouts to keep the Sailfish at bay before Alex Koronis (6-1) entered in the bottom of the ninth.
Both teams were held off the scoresheet until the 11th inning. Albanese, who went 4-for-6 on the night, continued to swing a hot bat for Tampa and spark the offense. Correy Figueroa followed up Albanese's single to start the inning with one of his own to push Albanese to third base. Pena hit a long sacrifice fly to left, scoring Albanese, to put the Spartans up 9-8.
Sailfish third baseman Jeff Moyer led off the bottom of the inning with a single to right, but that was the only hit Koronis allowed, as he held Palm Beach Atlantic scoreless for the remainder of the game to earn his sixth win of the season. Koronis tossed two and one-third innings, walking two and striking out three.
Tampa now heads to Miami Shores to take on No. 4 Barry University in a three-game conference series beginning tomorrow at 6 p.m. UT will offer livestats through www.tampaspartans.com.
