TAMPA, Fla. - Another big inning pushed the No. 16 University of Tampa baseball team past No. 13 Grand Valley State University 17-4 on Wednesday night. The Spartans (19-5) put up runs in each of the first five innings, including a 10-run second that put the game out of reach for the Lakers (6-2)
Mike Schwartz opened up the scoring for Tampa, hitting a solo shot in the first frame. Schwartz would eventually finish the game 3-for-3 with three RBI, but it was in the second inning that the Spartan bats came alive. With the bases loaded, Tyler Cox singled to right-center, plating two runners. Devin Gonzalez, who finished 3-for-4 in the game, also added a two-run single in the inning and catcher Mike Blanke blasted his second homer of the season, a three-run shot to right.
Michael Park (1-0) started on the hill for Tampa, throwing five solid innings, allowing seven hits and just one run for his first win of the year. Kyle Schepel was tabbed with the loss.
The Spartans return to conference action this weekend with a three-game set against Nova Southeastern beginning Friday at 6 p.m. at home.
