Black Leads Tampa to Victory Over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez
St. Petersburg, Fla. - In a game that remained close throughout the first half and part of the second, the University of Tampa men's basketball team came through in the clutch to record a 76-65 victory over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at the Eckerd Classic. The Spartans now stand at 4-1 on the season with the victory.
The Spartans held on to a minimal lead throughout the first, carrying a six-point advantage into the half before extending the lead to 21 points with just over 1`2-minutes remaining in the contest. Puerto Rico-Mayaguez closed the margin to five points with just over two-minutes remaining before Tampa pulled away following crucial free-throws by Jeremy Black and Johnathan Ball. Black then sealed the victory with a dunk with two-seconds on the clock.
Black paced the Spartans with a team-high 19 points and eight rebounds. A total of five Spartans finished with double figures in scoring as Chris Evans had 13 and Chris King netted 11. T.J. Lundy and A.J. Davis came off the bench to register new career highs with 11 and 10 points respectively. Evans led the team in rebounds with 11.
