Fred Woods Leads UT Past Emmanuel
TAMPA, Fla. - A career day for University of Tampa men's basketball player Fred Woods was all the Spartans needed as it defeated Emmanuel (Ga.) College by a score of 90-76. UT improves to 5-1 on the season as the Lions drop to 9-3. The game was played at the Tampa Prep Gymnasium.
Woods finished with 37 points and 18 rebounds, marking the most points for a Spartan since Jeremy Black recorded 37 against Eckerd on Feb. 20, 2008. The performance ranks second on the UT all-time single-game records to Todd Linder's 45. Woods' performance also included team highs of 10 offensive rebounds and seven blocks shots.
Though Tampa never trailed, Emmanuel stayed within striking distance for the majority of the contest. With a six point halftime lead, UT needed just over five minutes in the second half to stretch its advantage to 19 points. The Spartans maintained their double figure lead for the remainder of the contest.
Matt Tomaszewski scored a career high 14 points on 5-9 shooting with two three-pointers. Tomaszewski also contributed seven rebounds and two blocks. Johanthan Ball and Anthony LaBruno each added 12 points for UT.
Ball led Tampa with eight assists while tallying four blocked shots in an all-around effort. Rashad Callaway added seven assists and a team-high three steals. UT shot 53 percent from the field while holding the Lions to a 34.6 mark.
Tampa is back in action when it hosts Benedict College on Sunday at 3 p.m., at the Martinez Center. The meeting is a rematch of the 2008 NCAA South Regional semifinal as BC took the victory.
