Florida Southern Downs Tampa
LAKELAND, Fla. - A career day by Anthony LaBruno was not enough as The University of Tampa (9-6, 3-3 SSC) men's basketball team fell to Sunshine State Conference rival Florida Southern College (16-4, 5-1 SSC) by an 89-70 score.
The Moccasins held the lead for the majority of the game and overcame a Spartan rally at the beginning of the second half to register the double figure victory. After trailing 45-32 at the half, Tampa cut the Florida Southern lead to just four points before the Mocs used another surge to record a comfortable victory.
LaBruno turned in a career high 26 points to lead all scorers. He finished 8-11 from the field with a 3-pointer. The junior from Bayonne, N.J., was also 9-11 from the free-throw line.
Rashad Callaway added 17 points while Johnathan Ball had 10 for the Spartans. Ball also joined Fred Woods for the team lead with five rebounds.
Florida Southern finished the game with 22 offensive rebounds as it outscored Tampa 26-2 in second chance points. The Mocs also used a deep bench as a total of nine players scored.
