Johnathan Ball Helps Tampa To Overtime Victory Over Eckerd
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (13-7, 7-4 SSC) men's basketball team won its fourth straight game with a 77-75 overtime win over Eckerd College (11-12, 3-9 SSC) in Sunshine State Conference action.
Johnathan Ball turned in a career-high 28 points on 8-12 shooting with four three-pointers. The senior from Tampa added a pair of three-pointers in overtime to help the Spartans secure the victory.
The game included 14 lead changes and a total of 14 ties, as each team had an opportunity to claim the victory in regulation. With UT holding a 60-59 lead with eight second remaining, Eckerd's Lewis Lampley made one of two free throws to tie the game before UT missed the game winner.
In overtime, Ball evened the score at 65-65 with 2:49 on the clock and then gave Tampa the lead for good with a three-pointer on the next possession. In the final minute, Ball and Anthony LaBruno each made a pair of free throws to secure the SSC victory.
LaBruno added 14 points for Tampa as Rashad Callaway had a team-high nine assists and two steals. Ball also led the Spartans with nine rebounds.
The Spartans hit the road on Saturday for a conference matchup at Barry with a 4 p.m. scheduled tip. UT will also meet Nova Southeastern on Sunday at 6 p.m., in a make-up from Feb. 4.
