UT’s Season Ends In SSC Tourney At Rollins
WINTER PARK, Fla. - The University of Tampa's (11-16) men's basketball team saw its 2009-10 season conclude with a 73-54 loss to No. 17 Rollins College (23-5) in the 2010 Blue Cross Blue Shield Sunshine State Conference tournament quarterfinals.
Tampa stayed within striking distance in the first half, closing on an 8-3 run as the Tars took a 25-31 lead to the break. After the Spartans cut the RC lead to two on a pair of occasions in the second half, the Tars proved to be too much as it built a double figure lead with just over 10-minutes to play.
Rollins pulled away as it went on a 21-5 run to build a 67-47 lead with 5:23 on the clock. The Spartans closed the gap to 13, but Rollins responded with the final six points of the game to end any upset bid.
Rashad Callaway led Tampa with 13 points as the team's leading scorer also notched a team-high four assists. Senior Anthony LaBruno closed out his UT career with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Despite a losing record, the Spartans had a number of bright spots on the season that was highlighted by a double overtime victory over then-No. 2 Valdosta State on Dec. 12. 12 of UT's 16 losses came by double figures as Tampa also took nationally ranked Florida Southern to overtime in Lakeland.
