Chowan Edges Tampa in Low-Scoring Contest
TAMPA, Fla. - Chowan University (6-5) handed the University of Tampa (2-7) men's basketball team its fourth consecutive loss as the Hawks nipped the Spartans in a 53-49 affair from the Bob Martinez Athletics Center on Monday.
Chowan took a 30-28 lead to halftime as the second half remained close with each team holding the lead on several occasions. With the game tied at 49-49 with 3:29 to play, the Spartans had its chances within the final minutes, though it missed all five field goal attempts inside three minutes to play.
Ted Amendola turned in a career effort as the junior scored a career-high 18 points while going 7-for-9 from the field. He also had a team-high three steals while converting on all four free throw attempts.
Ashton Graham added 17 points as senior Corey Pelot came off the bench to grab a team-high eight rebounds. UT also played without its starting point guard, Jon Riles, for the entire second half due to an injury.
The Spartans will now take the NCAA-mandated hiatus and return to action on Thursday, Dec. 29, as it will face Brock University (Canada) in a 5 p.m., meeting. The game will be the second contest of the Tampa Classic, following the Eckerd College vs. Winston Salem State University meeting at 3 p.m.
