Steady Spartans Put Out Fire
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (2-0) men's basketball team held control for a 65-56 victory over Southeastern (Fla.) University (7-3) on Tuesday at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.
The Spartans needed less than five minute to grab a 9-2 lead and led by as many as 11 points before heading to the half with a 30-21 advantage.
Southeastern hung around, cutting the UT lead to four points with 7:45 to play. That prompted a 7-0 Tampa run in under two minutes of play, putting the game out of reach for the Fire.
Da'Markco Foster led all scorers with 18 points as the junior from Cincinnati connected on 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Senior Anthony Griffis added 15 points to go with a team-high three steals.
Freshman Austin Rettig came off the bench to grab a team-high eight rebounds while scoring seven points. Jon Riles led the Spartans with seven assists.
The Spartans connected on 10 baskets from long range, and also forced 25 Southeastern turnovers.
After a pair of home victories, the Spartans will return to action at the Eckerd Classic on Friday, playing Clark Atlanta University at 5:30 p.m., in St. Petersburg, Fla.
