Spartans Survive Late Game Scare in Game at Puerto Rico Bayamon
BAYAMON, P.R. - The No. 22 University of Tampa (8-0) men's basketball team stayed undefeated with a 69-67 victory over the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon (4-5) in the first of three contests in Puerto Rico for the Spartans.
Tampa never trailed in the game, and led by as many as 11 points before being tested late. The Spartans also led by as many as 10 points in the second half, though UPRB chipped away at the lead and had the ball with just a two-point deficit inside a minute to play.
With UT holding a 69-67 lead, Bayamon had two possessions with under a minute left, missing a pair of field goals along with two free throws. The final shot was a missed jumper with 3-seconds on the clock, as UPRB came down with the offensive rebound but did not have time for another shot.
Da'Markco Foster scored 13 of his team-leading 18 points in the second half as he also led all Spartans with seven rebounds and five assists.
Stefon Barfield was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, as each were from 3-point range. He also converted both free throw attempts and finished with 14 points. Eric Moraes provided a spark off the bench, matching Foster with seven boards.
The Spartans have two more games on its slate during the trip to Puerto Rico, including a Monday night contest against the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras at 6 p.m. Eastern. Live stats will be available through TampaSpartans.com.
