Spartans Hit 10 Wins in Puerto Rican Blowout
BAYAMON, P.R. - The No. 22 University of Tampa (10-0) men's basketball team dominated the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez (4-6) as it remained perfect with a 109-61 victory in the last of three games in Puerto Rico.
The Spartans scored the first 18 points of the game and took a commanding 68-21 advantage to the break. UT surpassed the 100-point plateau for the first time this season as the last time UT has topped three-digits came on Nov. 27, 2009 against Edward Waters.
Anthony Griffis scored a team-high 22 points as Callum Townsend contributed 21 off the bench. Both players connected on five 3-pointers. Da'Markco Foster added 17 points while Vincent Cornu chipped in 11.
Foster led Tampa with eight rebounds. Terrell Pritchett recorded a team-leading nine assists off the bench as Griffis tallied five steals.
The Spartans shot 52.6 percent from the field, including a 43.9 clip from beyond the arc. The Spartans also forced 18 turnovers and outrebounded UPRM by a 50-38 margin.
Tampa will head into the mandated NCAA break from Dec. 20-26, with a perfect record as it approaches the school-record start of 16-0 from the 2010-11 season. UT returns to action on Dec. 29 at the four-team Tampa Classic, where it will open against Miles College at 4 p.m.
Eckerd College and Paine University will also compete in the two-day classic, squaring off at 2 p.m., on Dec. 29. Live stats and a video feed will be available through TampaSpartans.tv.
