Spartans Hold on For South Region Win Over PBA
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (3-1) men's basketball team allowed Palm Beach Atlantic University (1-3) to stay within striking distance, but ultimately came away with a 62-58 win in an NCAA South Region matchup at the Martinez Center.
Tampa never trailed and held a double digit lead on several occasions while leading by as many as 12. The Sailfish would hang around and cut the UT lead to 60-58 with 39-seconds to play in regulation.
The Spartans would take a 61-58 lead as freshman Matt Johnson converted on 1-of-2 free throws in the ensuing possession. PBA would follow up with a missed 3-pointer and was unable to convert again, after grabbing the offensive board.
Da'Markco Foster was the lone Spartan in double figures as the senior led all scorers with 27 points. Vincent Cornu led Tampa with 13 rebounds as Eric Moraes added 11. Jordan Davis led UT for the fourth straight game with seven assists as the point guard also had two steals.
UT was hindered by a poor showing at the free throw line as the team was a combined 11-of-30 from the charity stripe. PBA also struggled at the line, connecting on 19-of-30.
The Spartans will be back in action on Nov. 29-30 at the Eckerd Thanksgiving Classic where they will meet Armstrong on Friday and Puerto Rico-Bayamon on Saturday.
