Last Second Block Solidifies Spartan Win Over Lions
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (9-3, 2-1 SSC) men's basketball team defeated Saint Leo University (12-3, 1-2 SSC) 59-57 at the Bob Martinez Center Wednesday night.
After scoring the first two baskets of the game, Tampa ran into several tough defensive schemes executed by Saint Leo. The Spartans trailed for the majority of the half after turning the ball over 12 times, giving the Lions an offensive fuel. The home team did manage to hold Saint Leo's leading scorer, Jerrel Harris, to four points in the half.
Eric Moraes ended the first period with eight points, as the Spartans entered the locker room down by five.
The Lions began to pull away early on during the second period, leading by as many as 12 points. The Spartans received the energy they needed after Ryan Kidd tied the game up at the 5:28 mark. Although the Lions regained their lead, the Spartans managed to stay within two points, eventually tying the game up again after a pair of free throws with one minute of regulation.
Tampa attacked the basket, fighting for the advantage with 50 seconds to go. Tampa took the lead after heading to the line with less than 20 seconds remaining. The only thing the Spartans had left to do was defend to the end, which is what occurred as the Lions had the opportunity to send the game into overtime, but a block by Moraes at the four second mark solidified the Spartan victory.
Moraes concluded the contest with 12 points, while Jordan Davis recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Coach Schmidt is now one win away from 600 program wins, as the Spartans look to add on to their four game winning streak at Florida Tech this Saturday. The Spartans lead the all-time series 46-21 against the Panthers.
