Spartans Stumble Against Lions, Snap Three-Game Winning Streak
SAINT LEO, Fla.-The University of Tampa (14-7, 7-5 SSC) men's basketball team fell to Saint Leo University (19-6, 7-5 SSC) by a score of 51-57.
The Spartans started off on the wrong foot as they failed to score a basket in the first seven minutes of the game. However, the Spartans fought back to take the lead 13-9 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
The two squads traded baskets as Saint Leo controlled the halftime lead, up 28-25. Vincent Cornu led the Spartans with seven points and six rebounds, while Eric Moraes contributed six points and seven rebounds at the half.
In the second half Tampa failed to convert during opportune times as Saint Leo held a 10 point lead for the majority of the period. The Spartans cut the lead down to four with 15 seconds left, but could not complete the come from behind victory.
Cornu finished with a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds for Tampa. Moraes also finished with nine points and 12 rebounds.
Tampa will travel to Lynn University to play against the Fighting Knights on Saturday at 4 p.m. Lynn leads the all-time series 20-16. The Spartans defeated the Fighting Knights earlier this year, 51-46.
