Da’Markco Foster and Jordan Davis Earn All-SSC Honors
WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Sunshine State Conference announced its postseason awards, with University of Tampa men's basketball players Jordan Davis and Da'Markco Foster earning all-SSC honors.
Florida Southern junior Kevin Capers headlined the 2013-14 All-Sunshine State Conference Men's Basketball Team as Player of the Year, it was announced Friday. Florida Tech's Corbin Jackson was named Defensive Player of the Year. Barry's Yunio Barrueta was named Newcomer of the Year, while fellow Buccaneer Adrian Gonzalez was named Freshman of the Year. Florida Southern's Linc Darner was named Coach of the Year.
Named to the All-SSC First Team with Barrueta and Capers was Saint Leo's senior guard Jerrel Harris, Florida Tech's junior guard Jermaine Jackson and Rollins' senior guard Mitch Woods.
Receiving a spot on the all-conference second team was Tampa's junior guard Jordan Davis and senior guard Da'Markco Foster, Lynn's junior guard Aaron Harrison, Barry's junior guard Deric Hill and Nova Southeastern's sophomore guard Chris Page.
An All-Newcomer Team was also selected. Earning spots were Barry's Barrueta, Tampa's Davis, Lynn's Harrison, Florida Tech's Corbin Jackson and Nova Southeastern's Page.
Voting for the All-SSC Men's Basketball Team was conducted among the league's men's basketball coaches.
A junior from Winter Haven, Fla., Capers led the league in scoring with 20 points per game. He also ranked in the top-10 in the SSC in assists (107), free-throw percentage (.777), steals (51) and assist-turnover ratio (1.5). Capers was a three-time SSC Men's Basketball Player of the Week during the 2013-14 season.
A redshirt sophomore transfer from Rockledge, Fla., Corbin Jackson led the league in blocked shots with 87 total blocks for a 3.1 average per game. He also led the SSC in rebounds with 306 (10.9 rebounds per game), including 235 defensive rebounds (8.4 rebounds per game). Jackson was also a three-time SSC Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
A sophomore transfer from Miami, Fla., Barrueta averaged 14.2 points per game and nine rebounds per game in his first season with the Buccaneers. His nine rebounds per game ranked him second in the conference.
Barry's freshman guard, Gonzalez, averaged 11.8 points per game in his first collegiate season. He ranked sixth in the SSC in field goal percentage, hitting 55 percent of his shots. He also ranked ninth in offensive rebounds per game (2.2).
Florida Southern head coach Linc Darner is named SSC Coach of the Year for the fifth time. He also earned the recognition in 2013, 2010, 2009 and 2008. Darner led the Moccasins to a league leading 22nd regular season conference title, fifth during his current eight-year tenure.
