Tampa Falls Short to NSU in Conference Opener
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.-The University of Tampa men's basketball team (3-4, 0-1) fell to Nova Southeastern (4-2, 1-0) on Saturday afternoon in the premier game of Sunshine State Conference play by a final score of 86-82.
The Spartans evened up the match 41 all by the end of the first half despite an early eight point deficit. Tyler Zacur led the squad's offense with 10 points followed by Jordan Davis with eight points and five rebounds, assisting six in the half.
The momentum changed with three minutes left to play as Austin Rettig's three-pointer dropped to put the Spartans at a mere four-point deficit. However, the Sharks outlasted the Spartans final efforts to take the win.
Zacur led the Spartans, tallying 22 points to set a new personal career-high. Davis posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists in addition to a team-high of nine rebounds. Eugene McCrory tallied 14 points with seven rebounds. Rettig registered 11 points and eight rebounds.
NSU's Chris Page notched 28 points and five rebounds in the contest. Justin Jeangerard recorded an additional 17 for the Sharks to secure the win.
The Spartans return to action on Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. to host Texas A&M-Kingsville.
