Spartans Roar Past Lions
TAMPA, Fla. - Senior Jordan Davis used a 19 point, 11 rebound, and eight assists effort to lead the University of Tampa Spartans to a 63-48 victory over the Saint Leo Lions.
The victory moves UT to 9-5 and 3-2 in SSC play, while Saint Leo drops to 10-6 and 2-3 in the SSC.
Tampa used a 13-6 run in the final five minutes of the first half to take a 33-20 advantage going into the break. In the first 20 minutes of action, the Spartans used tenacious defense as they held the visiting Lions to 18 points on 7-23 (30.4%) shooting. Offensively, UT shot 12-25 (48%) from the field, including 4-9 (44%) from beyond the arc.
The Spartans defense continued to play tough as they only allowed nine field-goals to the Lions. UT was also ferocious on the boards as they collected 19 second-half rebounds. Offensively, Sophomore Austin Rettig led Tampa, as he put up 15 points on 5-7 (71.4%) from the floor, including 3-3 (100%) from beyond the arc.
Senior Eugene McCrory had a game high 13 rebounds for the Spartans.Sophomore Matt Johnson and freshman Othniel Shelton each contributed with eight points.
The Spartans will be back in action on Saturday, as they host Palm Beach Atlantic in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 4:00 P.M.
