Spartans Prepare For Crucial SSC Matchups
Tampa Hosts Long Time Rival Florida Southern
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa men's and women's basketball teams will be back in SSC action Wednesday night as they welcome in Florida Southern to the Martinez center. This is the second time the two teams will square off this season.
The women will kick off the doubleheader against the Florida Southern Mocs at 5:30 pm. The two teams met earlier in the season as FSC won the matchup 71-67. Four Spartans scored double figures as Juliana Cavallaro and Elena de Alfredo each scored 14 points. Taylor McVey added 13 points, while Karma Jeremie contributed with 12.
Last time out the Spartans squared off against the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish, as PBA used a 20-0 second quarter run to claim a 67-61 victory over UT. Cavallaro led Tampa in scoring as she scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
For the season, Cavallaro leads UT in scoring as the senior is averaging 14.5 points per game. She is also third on the team with 5.1 rebounds per game. de Alfredo is second on the team with 12.7 points per game and is leading the team with a 47.2 three-point shooting percentage.
The men's team will conclude the doubleheader with Florida Southern at 7:30 pm. FSC took the first meeting of the season between the two teams with a final score of 93-75. Pat Bacon and Duke Shelton led the Spartans in scoring as they each scored 10 points in the contest.
Last time out Tampa defeated Palm Beach Atlantic 81-67. Bacon led the charge for UT as the guard recorded 27 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Marcel Robinson and Austin Rettig added double-digit scoring efforts as they scored 17 and 13 points respectively.
Bacon leads the Spartans in scoring for the season as he is averaging 19.8 points per contest. Shelton leads the team in field goal percentage, as the sophomore is shooting 58.6 percent from the field. Matt Johnson is serving as the offensive catalyst, as the junior guard is leading the team with 5.4 assists per game.
