John Jones: Class of 2016 Hall of Fame Spotlight
Former men's basketball standout remains one of head coach Richard Schmidt's all-time favorites.
TAMPA, Fla. - A member of the Class of 2016 University of Tampa Athletics Hall of Fame class, John Jones played basketball for the Spartans from 1983-87.
Jones is among the 10 members that will be honored at a banquet to be held at the Vaughn Center on October 13, beginning with a 6 p.m. reception followed by a 7 p.m. dinner and ceremony. For more information, please contact Hall of Fame chairman Gil Swalls.
Jones was the first star player when the sport was reinstated at UT as part of the first class of the modern era. A four-time all-Sunshine State Conference selection was a first-team choice as a senior, he was the team's top defensive player for four years.
He became known for guarding the best player on the opposing team, regardless of position. He remains the program leader in minutes played, ranks second in games played, fourth in assists, fourth in games started, eighth in free throws made, ninth in points and 10th in rebounds.
He led the team to four 20-plus win seasons and a historic win over North Carolina State. He became sixth player in school history to reach the 1,000-point milestone.
Following are answers from a Q&A with Jones regarding the selection to his alma mater's Hall of Fame.
Family members:
Married to Marilyn Jones. Has five children, Derrell Berrien (29), Monica Jones (27), John Jones, Jr. (27), Jeremy Jones (22) and Desiree Jones (21).
What have you done following graduation?
I have been employed by Sarasota County for 27 years working in the Parks & Recreation Department. I also have been involved in youth sports for the past 20yrs creating my own youth organization named " BAY CITY BALLERS."
How your time at UT influenced your future?
I became a person that had to lead. By learning this I have learned how to accept that position throughout my life as it has move forward.
Greatest UT memory?
Upsetting North Carolina State's 11th ranked basketball team at the Martinez Sports Complex. Also, The numerous big games in which we were involved in during my tenure.
Biggest influence at UT?
Richard Schmidt and my mom Geraldine Caldwell
Favorite spot on campus?
Plant Hall
Thing you miss most about UT?
The comradery that was developed while I was on campus.
Thoughts on being inducted in to UT Hall of Fame?
This honor ranks very very high in my life accomplishments. This is proof that the hard work that it took to reach this level paid off. Plus the success that we achieved during my time at UT was appreciated.
