Tampa Finishes in Top Five Following Record Second Round
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa golf team matched a school record with a 289 in the second round to finish fifth overall at the 2008 Spartan Invitational at Rogers Park.
The Spartans shot three sub-300 rounds after beginning play with a 299 on Monday. UT answered with a 289 and 294 in Tuesday's final rounds. The 882, or +30 score, put Tampa ahead of Sunshine State Conference opponents Florida Tech and Eckerd, who finished sixth and seventh respectively.
Brevard Community College took the team championship with an even 852. Saint Leo, Webber, St. Thomas and Tampa rounded out the top five.
UT's Kyle Roy turned in the team's first top-five performance of the year with a personal best 214. After shooting a first round 71, Roy concluded play with a 69 and 74 in the final two rounds to finish fifth at +1. Saint Leo's Craig Cisbani took the top prize at -3 with a 210.
Ryan Barnett joined Roy in the top-10 as his 216 was good for a ninth place tie. Kris Shane place 44th with a 230 while Chad Bouchard came in 50th at 232. Nicolas Jutigny shot a third round 70, but did not count towards the total.
Barnett led all Spartans with a second round 68 as him and Roy were the lone Spartans to shoot under 70 in a round.
Other Spartans competing were Eric Snow (T-37th), Weston Parrish (T-41st), Charlie Green (T-47th), Mike Mottola (T-56th), Josh Detmer (58th) and Brett St. Clair (59th).
