Tampa Wins Spartan Invitational, Claims First Team Title Since 2001
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's golf team won its first team championship since the 2001 season, placing first at the annual Spartan Invitational. The two-round event was hosted by UT at Rogers Park Golf Course.
The Spartans concluded play with a 295 after firing a 285 in Monday's first round. At 580 (+12), Tampa outpaced Brevard Community College (592) by 12 strokes. Webber International (602), Saint Leo (609), Warner (624) and Ave Maria (686) rounded out the six team field.
Quin Trigg and Taylor Noel finished with a 144, placing the Spartan duo in a third-place tie. Kris Shane (145) rallied to finish fifth overall as his final round of 70 marked a team and individual best for the second day.
After leading the field following a first round score of 69, Nicolas Jutigny shot a 78 in the second round to finish with a 147, placing him seventh among the 58 individuals who participated. Jared Pane and Parker Wingfield totaled a 149, earning a 12th place spot as Charlie Green's 150 resulted in a 15th place effort.
Also competing for head coach Rick Christie's squad were Kevin Genuardi (151), Brixton Albert (154), Tucker Dooley (154), Cameron Lojewski (154), Scott Serwa (157), Geoff Baulet (158), Keaton Phillips (159), Kyle Roy (160), Mark Cleary (160) and Josh Detmer (160).
The individual medalist was William Anderson on Brevard, who carded a 142 to finish even for the tournament. Saint Leo's Mark Sabatino (143) placed second overall as each shot a 70 in the final round.
Tampa returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 17 at the Saint Leo Invitational at Lake Jovita Country Club.
