No. 4 Tampa Trumps No. 10 Queens
MARIETTA, Ga. - The No. 4 University of Tampa men's lacrosse team dominated from start to finish, as they defeated the No. 10 ranked Queens University Royals 20-4 Saturday afternoon in a neutral site matchup. Tampa starts the season at 1-0, while Queens drops to 0-1.
11 different Spartans netted goals, while seven different players added assists. Sophomore Conor Whipple and junior Chris Vetter led the way for UT with five points, as they each netted three goals, and dished out two assists. Senior Zak Goldback and junior Mike Morris each added three points, as Goldback put in three goals, and Morris added two goals and an assists. Nick Ferreiro, Jon McGowan, Daniel Saviero, M.J. Lorenzo, A.J. Leary, Dylan Kane, and Anderon Wheeler each contributed with a goal.
UT also won the faceoff battle, as they took 16 of the 28 at the X. Ferreiro took control of faceoff-x, as he won 11 out of 17, while also picking up 7 ground balls.
Defensively, Andrew Failla got the victory for Tampa, as he racked up four saves. He saw 45 minutes between the pipes for the Spartans, Thomas Brill picked up two saves, while Shane Giunta had one save.
Queens was led by Evan Farkas, as he netted two goals.
Tampa got the ball rolling quickly in the first half as Morris took a pass from Riley Piper and scored the first goal of the season 15 seconds into the ball game. Tampa scored seven goals in the first quarter to take a 7-2 lead. UT then went on to score two goals in the second quarter to take a 9-3 going into the half.
In the second half, the Spartans were firing on all cylinders, as they scored 11 second half goals. The Spartans defense gave up one goal in the second half, with just 10 seconds left to play.
The Spartan return to action tomorrow as they welcome in the Tusculum Pioneers. Game is scheduled to start at noon.
