No. 9 Tampa Avenges Loss With Dominating Win
NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The No. 9 University of
Tampa (11-2) men's lacrosse team had no problems with Walsh
University (1-6) as the Spartans took a 19-5 victory over the
Cavaliers on Thursday.
The Spartans scored the first four goals and built up a comfortable
11-3 halftime lead before outscoring their opponent 8-2 in the
second half.
Mike Morris continued his stellar play with a three-goal effort.
The junior from Oakville, Ontario has now scored in nine straight
games including multiple scores in eight of those contests. Morris
also turned in a team-leading 12 shots, including nine on
target.
Jonathan Franzese and Sean Giampietro came off the bench to
register a pair of hat tricks as Chris Vetter, M.J. Lorenzo and
Dylan Kane each held team honors with two assists.
Trevor Calleja won 20-of-24 faceoffs and also registered a
team-high eight groundballs. The Spartans also caused 10 turnovers,
led by Justin Fitzpatrick with two.
Shane Giunta started in goal, allowing just three goals with four
saves in 26:25 of action. He was relieved by Andrew Failla, who
registered three saves in 23:35, while giving up a pair of
goals.
Tampa outshot Walsh 50-21 on the game, notching 18 in the first
quarter compared to just six by its opponent. Tampa also held a
36-23 advantage in groundballs and won 23-of-27 faceoffs.
The Spartans will return home for a pair of Sunshine State
Conference games, against Lynn on April 11, and Florida Tech on
April 17. The games are slated for 3 p.m., and 8 p.m., respectively
at the Naimoli Family Athletic and Intramural Complex. UT will
