Trio of Spartans Earn USILA/Nike All-America Honors
Junior Conor Whipple garnered his third All-America selection while fellow junior Marty Heyn was named honorable mention for the second time. Senior Jake Schmidt is a first time All-American, earning a spot on the third team.
PERRY, N.Y. – The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association has announced its 2016 Division II USILA/Nike All-America teams, honoring three University of Tampa men's lacrosse student-athletes for the national awards.
Junior Conor Whipple earns his third-consecutive honor, picking up a Second Team selection while senior Jake Schmidt was named to the Third Team. Junior Marty Heyn garnered Honorable Mention on defense.
Whipple set the new single-season records for points (96) and assists (50) in his junior campaign. The attacker scored 46 goals while starting all 18 games for UT. The Tampa, Fla. native was a third team selection in 2015 while earning second team honors in his freshman season in 2014.
Schmidt was the hero in the NCAA quarterfinals against No. 4 Mercyhurst. The senior scored five goals in the second half of play to comeback from an 8-1 deficit. The midfielder scored 36 goals for the Spartans, adding 14 assists for 50 points in his final year of play.
Heyn earns honorable mention for the second time in his career, picking up the honor in his first year of play in 2014. The defender notched 21 ground balls in addition to 10 caused turnovers in his third season of action.
The Spartans concluded the season as National Semifinalists, falling to No. 1 Limestone in the Division II Championship Semifinal game. Tampa was 15-3 on the year.
