TAMPA, Fla. - Goalkeeper Ryan Thompson tied his own school record with 15 saves as the 14th-ranked University of Tampa (10-2-1, 4-2 SSC) men's soccer team notched a 3-1 victory over visiting Eckerd College (8-5, 3-3 SSC) in a Sunshine State Conference battle.
The victory broke a second place tie in the SSC between the schools in addition to being a critical NCAA South Region matchup. The Spartans entered the contest as the second-ranked team in the South Region while the Tritons are sixth.
Tampa's Dan Ingvarsson scored the lone goal of the first half on a penalty kick at 20:56. Ingvarsson pushed the kick past Eckerd goalkeeper Domenic Spedaliere to score the first goal.
In the second half, Pascal Milien gave Tampa a 2-0 lead when he scored on an unassisted breakaway at 64:29. Eckerd then cut the score in half when Anthony Arico put in a header on the left side of the Spartan goal. Arico was assisted by Joe Copland at 79:38.
With a 2-1 lead, the Spartans took a two goal advantage when freshman Jorge Jimenez scored at 86:05. The goal was created by Milien, who beat an Eckerd defender to find an open Jimenez for his second goal of the year.
After setting a UT school record with 15 saves at Barry on Saturday, UT goalkeeper Ryan Thompson matched his school record with 15. Thompson has now recorded 30 saves in the two-game SSC span.
