TAMPA, Fla. - The 10th-ranked University of Tampa Spartans used three second half goals to top Sunshine State Conference opponent Florida Tech by a score 4-1. With the win, Tampa improves to 14-2-1 overall and 6-2 in the SSC. Florida Tech drops to 6-10-1 overall, 2-5-1 in league play.
Just under five minutes into the game, Tampa's Ryan Maxwell headed a cross from Pascal Milien into the back of the net to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead. Less than four minutes later, The Panthers' Stanley Abada knotted the game at 1 when he took a shot from inside the box past goalkeeper Ryan Thompson.
The match would see no more scoring until the 76th minute, when Spartan defender Tom Layrisse threaded a pass to Milien who was left unmarked in front of the net. Milien shot the game-winner past Florida Tech's Cory Collins, putting Tampa up 2-1.
Maxwell, who was recognized before the match along with defender Lee Inglis as Tampa's lone seniors playing in their final regular season contests as Spartans, added another goal in the 87th minute for his eighth of the year.
Collins finished up with five saves. Thompson finished with three saves while scoring his first goal. With just over 30 seconds left in the game and Tampa holding onto a 3-1 lead, the Spartans were awarded a penalty kick. Thompson crossed midfield to take the shot, capping off the scoring at 4-1.
