2009 Tom Fitzgerald Memorial Soccer Game To Feature Two Professional Teams
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa men's soccer team has announced that it will host the fifth annual Tom Fitzgerald Memorial Soccer Festival, and event that will take place on Friday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. The event will feature a game between Real Salt Lake of the MLS and BK Hacken of Sweden.
Fitzgerald, a former MLS and UT coach, developed a strong tie between The University of Tampa and Swedish players dating back to 1978. He coached at Tampa from 1987-1995 and again in 2004 prior to his death. UT's all-time winningest coach, Fitzgerald also coached for UCLA and the Columbus Crew of the MLS.
BK Hacken is located in Gothenburg, Sweden as the well respected professional club plays in the Swedish Allsvenskan. The team features players from Sweden, Brazil, Nigeria and Finland.
Real Salt Lake head coach Jason Kries brings his team in looking to build on their 2008 MLS conference finals appearance. Jason was also coached by Fitzgerald on the US National B Team from 1992-94.
Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Bob Martinez Sports Center across from Pepin Stadium on North Boulevard. There will be no complimentary tickets as this is a fundraiser to raise money for the Tom Fitzgerald Scholarship Fund. All proceeds from the event go directly to the scholarship fund in Fitzgerald's name. Cost of tickets is $10.00 (adults 18 and older) and $5 (17 and younger).
