TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (0-1) men's soccer team suffered a 4-2 loss in its 2014 season opener to No. 2 Carson-Newman University (1-0).
The Spartans opened the scoring in the 15th minute as Chris Campbell netted a goal with the assist from Keith Francisco.
Carson-Newman evened the score at 1-1 in the 19th minute on a goal by Sindre Welo. The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the 36th minute as Welo assisted Joao Pedro Dowsley for the goal.
CNU opened the second half scoring in the 60th minute as Tanner Health netted a cross from Rurik Pereira. Dowsley notched his second goal of the match in the 83rd minute to give the Eagles a 4-1 advantage.
UT struck in the 88th minute after Brandon Loafman converted a penalty kick cutting the deficit to 4-2.
The Spartans were unable to mount a comeback in the match despite outshooting the Eagles 11-10.
Goalkeeper Zak Downes tallied four saves on the night while Chris Campbell and Daniel Barboto led the team with four shots each. Criag Laird added two shots as Alex Knaggs also chipped in with one.
