MIAMI SHORES, FLA. - The University of Tampa men's soccer team took on the Barry Buccaneers Saturday night at Buccaneer Field and finished on top in overtime 2-1.
The Spartans improve to 2-0 in overtime this season, to 8-4 overall and to 4-1 in the Sunshine State Conference.
In what was a back and forth battle throughout much of the first period, Thomas Coombes put Barry ahead 1-0 with his sixth goal of the season at the 36-minute mark.
Tampa entered the second half trailing 1-0 as they were outshot by Barry 5-9 in the first period. This marks the fourth game this season in which the Spartans trailed at halftime, all of which have come on the road.
It looked as if the Spartans were headed towards their second shutout defeat this season, but Nikolai Hammer, with an assist by Jonathan Tiggs, drew the score even 1-1 late in the second period at the 74-minute mark with his second goal of the season.
The game headed into overtime still deadlocked at 1-1, but it wasn't long before Monty Berrow gave Tampa the win with a header at the 92-minute mark, his fourth goal of the season.
