Tampa Wins Season Opener, First SSC Meet
TAMPA, Fla. - In its first-ever Sunshine State Conference men's and women's swimming meet, The University of Tampa defeated Florida Southern College by scores of 140-116 in the men's and 139-108 in women's action.
David Humphrey and Jeff Fiore each won a pair of races for UT in men's action. Humphrey won the 50 Free (21.53) and 100 Free (47.55) while Fiore championed the 500 Free (4:59.05) and 1,000 Free (10:38.23). Jonathan Wilks turned in a first-place showing in the 100 Breast (1:01.71) as Les Moore won the 400 IM (4:34.74).
In women's events, Heather Glenday, Ellie Eshleman and Lisa Bero each captured two top finishes. Glenday's came in the 200 Free (1:57.85) and 1,000 Free 10:44.62, with Eschleman winning the 100 Back (1:01.07) and 200 Back (2:12.12) and Bero the 100 Breast (1:10.37) and 200 Breast (2:28.41). Other Spartans to win their individual races were Catherine Patrell (200 Fly, 2:16.51) and Amy O'Brien (50 Free, 25.17).
Tampa returns to the pool on Saturday as it hosts Trinity (Texas) at 10:30 a.m.
