Tampa Tops Nova Southeastern For Second Win in Two Days
TAMPA, Fla. - For the second straight day, the University of Tampa men's and swimming teams notched a Sunshine State Conference triumph. On Saturday, the Spartan men defeated Nova Southeastern University 106-99 as the UT women won 126-79.
After winning over Florida Tech on Friday, Tampa's men registered the program's first-ever win over Nova. The pair of victories also came over the 2011-12 SSC champions.
The Spartan men started with a win in the 400 Medley Relay from Karl Burdis, Kevin Doran, Norbert Kovacs and Jeremy Parker (3:27.79). The meet was then sealed with a first-place showing in the 400 Free Relay from David Humphrey, Khalid Aldaboos, Jeremy Parker and Felipe Manzo (3:07.47). Tampa was also second in the 400 FR with Derek Krell, Max Coulls, Stephen Zieler and Jordan Augier (3:09.99).
Humphrey won a pair of individual races, as the senior championed the 50 Free (21.37) and 100 Free (46.89). In the 100 Free, Humphrey was the first of three Spartans to medal in the race. Krell (47.41) and Manzo (47.55) followed as UT's Aldaboos was fourth with a time of 47.64.
Norbert Kovacs also turned in a first-place finish in the 200 Fly (1:54.51) as Burdis won the 200 Back (1:54.60).
Tampa's women also started the meet with a win in the 400 Medley Relay with Allison Noe, Jamie Pappanastos, Catherine Parker and Kylie Piche (4:02.05). The final event for the women also went in UT's favor with the 400 Free Relay. Kristine Kassl, Erin Plachy, Piche and Heather Glenday topped the field with a showing of 3:36.75.
Tampa swept the women's 50 Free, with Erin Plachy finishing first with a time of 24.92. Fellow Spartans Kylie Piche (25.08) and Amy O'Brien (25.30) were the next to finish the race.
Also winning individual women's races for head coach Ed Brennan's Spartans were Alexandra Webb (200 IM, 2:14.07), Parker (200 Fly, 2:11.10), Kassl (100 Free, 53.64) and Michelle Walcker (200 Breast, 2:27.78).
The Spartans will next travel to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the four-day Nova Southeastern Invitational from Dec. 14-17.
