Spartans Record Breaking Run Ends in NCAA Regional Finals
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - After advancing to the NCAA II South Region Final for the first time in program history, The University of Tampa (35-13) softball team fell to host and number-one seed Barry University (44-6) in an eight inning affair by a score of 2-0.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the seventh inning, when Barry scored both of its runs on a two out, bases loaded double to right field by Ashley Likens. Both runs were unearned.
Heather VanLandingham and Deanna Henriott combined to enjoy an excellent pitching performance for the Spartans. VanLandingham started and threw six innings of scoreless softball while allowing just two hits and striking out one. Henriott entered in relief and pitched two innings, striking out two.
At the plate for UT, Krystal Crooks collected a pair of hits while Tampa's other hit came from Michele Horan.
The Spartans conclude one of the program's most successful season's as they advanced to the NCAA Regional finals for the first time in school history. With 35 victories, Tampa also tied its school record for victories. UT now looks forward to the 2009 season, as it expects to have seven returning starters and the return of both pitchers.
