Spartans Take First Conference Victory of Season
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The University of Tampa softball team took a 3-1 victory over Eckerd College in game one of a three game series. The victory improves the Spartans record to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the Sunshine State Conference.
In the fifth inning of play Tampa struck first as freshman Susan Jallo got on base and then advanced to second on an error by the pitcher. Following that play, senior Ashley Arcuri collected the RBI as she doubled and brought Jallo in for the first score of the game.
Eckerd retaliated in the bottom of sixth as two hits, a pass ball and a wild pitch allowed the Tritons to tie the game up 1-1. Kristen Torres had the unearned score for the Tritons.
Tampa solidified the game taking advantage of a walk and two errors made by the Triton defense. Arcuri accumulated her second RBI of the night as she singled and Jessica Keefe scored. Jallo scored the last run of the night as Michelle Horan capped an RBI and advanced to first on an error by the short stop Janelle Sedoris.
Heather Van Landingham pitched for the Spartans tallying nine strikeouts for the night and moving to 2-0 on the season.
