Spartans Slam Their Way to Two Victories
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The University of Tampa softball team clinched two more victories in a double header against conference opponent Eckerd College (6-10, 0-3). These wins boost the Spartans record to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the Sunshine State Conference.
The Spartans swept both game one and game two as they were each won by a margin of eight runs 8-0 and 10-2 respectively. Tampa hit five home runs total between the two games while producing a grand slam in each game.
Game one went scoreless until the sixth inning of play when the Spartans capitalized off a double by senior Michelle Horan bringing in teammates Ashley Arcuri and Susan Jallo. UT finished the seventh inning with six runs batted in. Rachel Browning received an RBI as she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Jallo then homered to left field collecting her first grand slam of her career at UT. Arcuri followed that play with a home run of her own.
Game two ended after only five innings of play and three home runs later. Eckerd got on the scoreboard in the first inning as Alex Sasso scored off a single by Janelle Sedoris. Browning answered with her second RBI of the day in the second inning as Becky Vyzas scored. Kallen Casey hit the second grand slam of the day in inning three. Jessica Keefe then hit a home run gathering two more RBIs. Vyzas closed the game with a three RBI home run in the fourth inning. Sasso had the other RBI for the Tritons.
Deanna Henriott got the win for both games improving her record to 4-2. Henriott had eight strikeouts in game one followed by four in game two.
