Spartans Split Doubleheader To Earn Series Victory Over Florida Southern
LAKELAND, Fla. - After falling by a 4-0 score in game one of a Sunshine State Conference softball doubleheader with Florida Southern College (26-22, 10-14 SSC), The University of Tampa (20-17, 11-10 SSC) responded with a come-from-behind 3-1 win the rubber game of the series.
In game one, the Spartan bats were held at bay as the team combined for just four hits. Cassie Barnes slugged a single and double as Julie Wisniewski and Brittany Dattilo each had a hit. Jessica Tejas reached base twice after drawing a pair of walks.
Kari Walsh (8-7) pitched for Tampa, throwing 6.0 innings..
The second game featured a three-run seventh inning by the Spartans with its backs against the wall. The Mocs grabbed the 1-0 lead in the second and would remain until Wisniewski drove UT first run on a double, scoring teammate Shannon Kelly. Susan Jallo would put Tampa ahead with a two-run homer.
Wisniewski and Jallo each collected two hits apiece at the plate as Kelly and Tejas also added hits.
Heather Van Landingham (12-10) notched the victory for the Spartans as the senior from Tampa went 7.0 innings. She scattered seven hits and had a strikeout.
Tampa closes out its 2010 regular season with a three-game series against Eckerd College, beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. The series will conclude with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m., where the four Spartan seniors will be honored between games.
