Spartans Clip Eagles Wings in Saturday Sweep
A day after giving up 5 runs to ERAU, UT shut them out in back to back games
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Spartans completed their series against the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Eagles on Saturday with a doubleheader. The first game ended in favor of the Spartans as they scored two runs in the second inning and it was enough to win the game while the second game was another shutout but a much more comfortable win as the Spartans came out on top 7-0.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
2nd Inning: Elly Pillers singled down the right field line with one out and moved to second as Miner drew a full-count walk. Lauren Pascoe replaced Pillers on second as a pinch runner. With two outs on the board, Jennie Sittloh hit a fly ball to left-center field that was dropped by the Eagles left fielder and allowed Pascoe and Miner to come in to score and give UT a 2-0 lead.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Dooley tossed 76 pitches in 5.1 innings with 47 pitches being strikes. In 1.2 innings of relief work, Miner tossed 30 pitches, with 21 being strikes.
- For the second game in a row against the Eagles, the runs for Tampa were unearned as they came off a fielding error by the home side.
- Miner came on in relief in the bottom of the 6th with the bases loaded and just one out but got two straight outs to get out of the jam without any damage.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- This was the Spartans sixth shutout win of the year and the fourth 2-0 win.
- The team has gone 11 straight games with at least one walk drawn.
- With their 20th win of the season, UT has now eclipsed last season's win total.
- UT is 5-1 when scoring two runs this year.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
1st Inning: UT opened the scoring early in the game as they took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the inning. Sahrina Cortes singled up the middle to start the game and took second base on a wild pitch. After the Eagles got one out, Bre Setree drew a walk with the count full to put two runners on. Elly Pillers singled right back up the middle which allowed Cortes to come in to score from second to make it two games in a row that Tampa scores first.
6th Inning: Shelby Press started the inning getting hit by a pitch to move to first base and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Setree. After the Eagles were able to get the second out of the inning, they intentionally walked Sittloh placing runners at first and second. Miner made the Eagles pay as she hit a single to left-center field that scored Press. Pascoe and Breanna Taphouse came in to replace Sittloh and Miner respectively as pinch runners. Maddie Farrell got a single up the middle on a 1-2 count that scored Pascoe and gave UT a 3-0 lead.
7th Inning: The home team got two quick outs but Setree was hit by a pitch on a 1-0 count to keep the inning going. Brooke Stiles replaced her as a pinch runner and advanced to second as Pillers drew a walk with the count full to put two runners on. Sittloh drove in a run with a single down the left field line that scored Stiles. Miner added another run with a single through the left side and M.Farrell drove in two runs with another single through the left side. Dooley closed out the scoring with a single to right field that made it 7-0.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- The Spartans had eight hits in the final game after having six hits in the first two games combined.
- Miner tossed 70 pitches in total in the complete game win with 49 being for strikes.
- Three Tampa batters were hit by pitches with Press being hit for the second time in three games.
- UT left eight runners on base while Embry-Riddle left four, a flip of the same stat in the first game of the day.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Tampa has outscored opponents 21-10 in the first inning this season.
- UT is now 4-0 in games in which the team scores three runs.
- The Spartans have not lost a three-game series this year and have not lost back to back games either.
UP NEXT:
The team will be back at home on Friday, March 24th as they open a three-game conference series against the Barry Buccaneers at 6 p.m. and face off against BU on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
