Spartans Outlast Barry for Doubleheader Sweep
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team overcame a late deficit in game one of a doubleheader and seized the momentum to take a doubleheader sweep at Barry University on Friday afternoon.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Game One Final: Tampa 3, Barry 1 (8 Innings)
Game Two Final: Tampa 1, Barry 0
Records: University of Tampa Spartans (6-3, 6-2 SSC), Barry University Buccaneers (6-11, 4-11 SSC)
Location: Buccaneer Field | Miami Shores, Fla.
All-time Series: Barry owns a 72-44 edge in the all-time series between Sunshine State Conference opponents. The Spartans have won six consecutive meetings, dating back to 2018.
HOW IT HAPPENED — GAME ONE:
- The game was scoreless until the Buccaneers plated an unearned run on a sacrifice bunt. Bottom 6 | 1-0 Barry
- With their backs against the wall, the Spartans rallied in the top of the seventh when Maddie Farrell singled through the left side to score Abigail Siegel. Top 7 | 1-1 Tie
- Tampa scored a pair of runs to grab its first lead of the game. Lauren Fantone drove home Mariah Galhouse on a sacrifice fly, and UT would add another on a Lexie Chevalier double that scored Corynn Miner. Top 8 | 3-1 Tampa
INSIDE THE STATS — GAME ONE:
- Galhouse and Chevalier each had a pair of hits.
- Galhouse reached base three times with two singles and a walk.
- Miner drew two walks.
- The top four hitters in the Spartan lineup accounted for four of the seven hits and reached base seven times.
- Stephanie Balmer and Cristina Clauberg each had a double, as did Chevalier.
- Miner moved to 3-2 on the season as she went 8.0 innings. She allowed just two hits while striking out 11 Buccaneers.
HOW IT HAPPENED — GAME TWO:
- A costly error made the difference as Fantone reached via a muffed throw and would later score on an RBI by Alexa Russo. Top 2 | 1-0 Tampa
INSIDE THE STATS — GAME TWO:
- Galhouse was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, with both of Tampa's hits.
- Galhouse and Clauberg each drew a walk.
- Galhouse tossed a 7.0 inning shutout to improve to 3-1 on the season. She allowed just four hits while notching seven strikeouts with no walks.
BEYOND THE BOX:
- After opening the season with three losses, the Spartans have rattled off six straight wins.
- Galhouse registered her second career shutout and eighth complete game.
- Both games of the doubleheader were counted as an SSC contest as the second game of Saturday's doubleheader will go down as a non-conference meeting.
