UT Set to Open NCAA Tournament Play Friday
INDIANAPOLIS - After capturing an automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament, the Sunshine State Conference regular-season and tournament champion University of Tampa will compete in the program's 14th national tournament.
Tampa received the No. 2 seed in the NCAA South Region, as Union University was awarded the No. 1 seed and the ability to host the 8-team regional on its campus in Jackson, Tenn. The Spartans will open play on Friday against No. 7 seed Valdosta State University.
Head coach Tom Jessee has led his team to a 29-5 overall record, capturing the program record for wins in a season. Currently riding an eight-game winning streak, the Spartans also sported a 17-3 SSC regular-season record in 2021-22. UT has also spent every week of the season in the WBCA national rankings, currently sitting at No. 18 in the country.
This marks the third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance for the Spartans, as 12 of the program's 14 tourneys have come under the leadership of Jessee.
