MELBOURNE, Fla. – University of Tampa women's lacrosse freshman Abby Coccagna was named Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week after anchoring the Spartan defense in a 2-0 week. The conference office announced the award on Monday for the period spanning April 11-17.
Coccagna totaled seven ground balls and three caused turnovers in a pair of victories, including Tampa's first-ever SSC win. The Spartans began with a 17-1 win over Ave Maria, a game in which Coccagna helped the defense limit the Gyrenes to a single goal. The Baltimore, Md. native held AMU scoreless in the opening half, as the team did not record a shot on goal. The defender finished the contest with one ground ball and a caused turnover.
In the program's first conference win, Coccagna posted a career-high six ground balls in the 8-7 overtime win against Saint Leo, adding a pair of caused turnovers. The freshman held the Lions' top scorers to a goal apiece.
On the season, Coccagna is second on the team in ground balls with 29 and third in caused turnovers with 13. The Spartans are 5-9 on the season and 1-3 in SSC play.
