Women's Lacrosse Climbs IWLCA Coaches Poll
The University of Tampa women's lacrosse team snags it's highest rank in program history at No. 18.
TAMPA, Fla. – In the IWLCA Division II Coaches poll announced on Monday, March 12th, the University of Tampa women's lacrosse program was tabbed the No. 18 best team in the nation. This is the highest ranking in program history.
Florida Southern (8-0) remains in the top spot in the IWLCA Division II Coaches Poll this week, collecting 22 of 25 first place votes. Adelphi (3-1), Lindenwood (7-0), and Le Moyne (4-0) hold their position in the second through fourth spots, while Florida Tech (7-0) breaks into the top five for the first time this season. Limestone (5-1) moves into the #6 slot, New Haven (2-0) holds at #7, and LIU Post (3-2) drops to eighth. Mercy (5-1) and Indianapolis (5-1) round out the top ten.
There are several compelling matchups between Top-25 teams this week, including #11 Rollins against Lock Haven (#25), and Queens (#15) versus #13 West Chester on Monday, while #8 LIU Post faces New Haven (#7) and #23 McKendree takes on #5 Florida Tech on Tuesday before the Bearcats tangle with top-ranked Florida Southern a day later. Thursday's action features #6 Limestone taking on Queens, and McKendree plays its third ranked opponent of the week on Friday, when they square off against #18 Tampa. The highlight of the weekend looks to be the battle between #4 Le Moyne and Stonehill (#24) on Saturday.
Tampa checks in at No. 18 after they opened their 2018 schedule playing against three nationally ranked opponents. In their very first game of the season, the Spartans upset the No. 11 ranked Rollins College Tars by a final score of 10-6. A week later, Tampa played the No. 13 ranked Limestone College Saints and only lost by two goals. UT then traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina, where the Spartans lost to the No. 7 ranked Queens University of Charlotte Royals by a final score of 14-8.
This past week, the Tampa Spartans went 3-0, defeating the Tusculum Pioneers 18-6, the Seton Hill Griffins 13-11, and the North Greenville University Crusaders 22-4. The Spartans currently sit with a 2018 record of 5-2.
The Sunshine State Conference is well represented in the poll, with Florida Southern snagging the No. 1 spot, followed by Florida Tech at No. 5, and Rollins College at No. 11.
