#18 Tampa Picks Up Second Straight Shutout
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The 18th-ranked University of Tampa (10-3) women's soccer team won its sixth straight game with a 2-0 victory over Flagler College (5-9).
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Saige Steinmetz scored her first goal as a Spartan. Courtney Evans and Charlotte White were credited with the assists as Evans increased her team-leading total to nine on the year.
Brittan Spence made the Spartan lead 2-0 in the second half when she scored from fellow freshman Caroline Spencer. With the goal, Spence moved into the team lead with Shelby Kuni as both now have five goals. Spencer recorded her first career assist one game after registering her first career goal, versus Palm Beach Atlantic.
Kendall Bourdon played the entire game in goal for UT, earning her fourth shutout of the year. The freshman snagged one save as Tampa outshot the Saints 16-6.
"The girls fought hard tonight against a pesky Flagler squad," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "We needed full concentration to see this one through. We created some good chances but lacked the cutting edge to finish off the opposition."
Lucey also added, "I was glad to see Saige (Steinmetz) finally in the stat sheet and Brittan (Spence) kill off the game after some excellent work from Caroline (Spencer). Maria and Marissa (Mohammed) were also tremendous at the back while keeping Flagler in check. We still have work to do and some things to sort out before Armstrong Atlantic on Saturday."
The Spartans return home where they will host Armstrong Atlantic on Saturday at 7 p.m. UT will offer live stats through www.tampaspartans.com. Fans may also sign up for eScores to receive free text message alerts from UT Athletic events.
