Spartans Catch Sailfish Off Guard in Victory
TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Tampa (5-3) women's soccer team defeated Palm Beach Atlantic University (5-4) Friday night by a score of 2-0.
"The girls played absolutely magnificent again," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "We played some delightful soccer and worked really hard from start to finish. As this was our fourth game in eight days I wasn't sure if we would be able to maintain our tempo. All credit to the girls though for pushing through it."
The Spartans got off to an early 1-0 lead off the foot of Brittan Spence from a cross pass assist by Lauren Moore in minute two. Spence would finish with two shots, one goal and one assist, while Moore would finish with two shots on goal and one assist.
Tampa increased their margin of victory to 2-0 in minute 64 by Jazmin Perry. Perry, whom now has six goals on the season, was assisted by Gabby Russo and Spence. Russo finished with two shots on goal and one assist.
"The PBA keeper made some incredible saves tonight and kept the score respectable," says Lucey. "The only negative was our inability to get the shutout. We allowed one shot all game and sadly let PBA take advantage. We need to be stronger mentally in the defensive end and stop giving away silly goals."
Palm Beach Atlantic was able to score a late game goal by Moriah Zusi to bring the score to 3-1.
"Our seniors are really pushing this team along as expected," continues Lucey. "Brittan (Spence) and Jazmin (Perry) are scoring and creating while Marta (Bertsos) and Sam (Kay) are controlling the midfield. Charlotte (White) is having another strong season on the right side at the back pushing into the attack at every opportunity. Lex ((DellaRocco) is our vocal leader and fires the team up every game."
Tampa will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. on Friday, Sept. 23 to face Lincoln Memorial University for their next game of the season.
