Spartans Dominate Lincoln Memorial To Give Gerry Lucey Milestone Win
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The University of Tampa (6-3) women's soccer team held Lincoln Memorial University (4-4-1) without a shot in a 2-0 Spartan victory over the Railsplitters. The game was played on the campus of Columbus State University. The victory marked the 100th career win for head coach Gerry Lucey, who needed under seven total seasons to accomplish the feat
"The girls played a very complete game today against LMU," says head coach Gerry Lucey. "We were busy all over the field. On such a huge night personally, I am very happy that we were able to achieve our success through high pressure and domination. It's not often you hold a team to zero shots on goal but we deserved today."
UT outshot its opponent by a 16-0 margin, also tallying nine shots on goal. With a goal in each half, the Spartans had 11 different players with at least one shot.
Freshman Lauren Moore found the back of the LMU net in the ninth minute, scoring the eventual game-winner on a header from classmate Gabby Russo.
Senior Jazmin Perry doubled the UT lead in the 45th minute, with her team-leading seventh goal of the year assisted by fellow senior Brittan Spence.
Perry finished with a team-high four shots as Russo and Carolyn Simon each were credited with two. Among Perry's shots were two on goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Emelie Karstrom claimed her second shutout of the season, as the stellar UT defensive unit did not allow a shot by LMU.
"Enjoy the win and back to basics tomorrow as we play a very strong AASU team. They are probably the best team we have seen in years, says Lucey."
